Royal India Trains- luxury, dignity and splendor

In: Deccan Odyssey

In early 2008, the “Society of International Railways Travelers” included in the list of “World’s top 25 Trains” India’s top three luxury trains these were Palace on Wheels, Deccan Odyssey and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.
The US based organization of those “who love the comfort, romance and fun of great trains” made the choice on the basis of their standards of service and accommodation and traveler pleasure.

Of the five Asian Trains in the list three are from India. The others are Eastern & Orient Express (South-East Asia) and Shangri-La Express (China-Tibet).

As far as India’s Royal Train Palace on Wheels is concerned, the train comprises 14 air conditioned deluxe saloons with world class facilities, is the showpiece of Indian railways. It operates between New Delhi and Rajasthan. Its coaches are named after former Rajput states, the aesthetics and interiors seeking too much the royal past.

Another Luxury train of India, the Deccan Odyssey is also worth applauding. The Deccan Odyssey Train travels through Deccan region over eight days. It has 21 coaches, of which 11 are passenger cars and two presidential suite cars. It also has a conference car, which can double as a dance floor and two restaurant cars.

Deccan Odyssey may fail to chug this year

For all those who are planning to a luxury ride across Maharashtra onboard the Deccan Odyssey, the news about shelving off the train may come as a big shock to them.

According to The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) board, the train could only run if the Indian Railways reduces the haulage charges and the new routes of shorter duration are approved.

The MTDC sources said that they had submitted the plan to the railways four months back, and till then there has been no responses from the Railways and if the railways does not agree upon the Indian royal train –the Deccan Odyssey is unlikely to happen.
The 21 coach train was built at a whooping cost of Rs 32 crore and became operational in the year 2005-06. MTDC has taken few steps to revive the train service and if the Indian Railways agrees to reduce the haulage charges, then the Deccan Odyssey may come out of the yard to offer an unparallel train journey to discerning travelers.

Goa; a fairytale destination of Deccan Odyssey

Swaying palms trees, and sparkling waters, the three indispensable elements that attract 2 million travelers annually to Goa’s balmy shores are ample in this tiny, glorious slice of India hugging the country’s western coastline and bounded by the Arabian Sea.

A solitary Portuguese settlement in India for almost 500 years, the influence of colonial rule can still be experienced all over the city; in the refined crumbling architecture and in the East-meet-West cuisines.

What exactly entices this heady mix of human to Goa, of all possible tropical paradises? First and foremost is the long coastline; the long and lovely beaches with coconut vendors, the Goas’ palm-backed beaches are, at their best, simply divine. Next contender comes the cuisines; seafood, spices unique to the state and high-level international cuisines. Then there’s art and architecture, a glorious amalgation of European opulence, Hindu Technicolor and local materials are sure to excite buffs of all things culturally.

Deccan Odyssey is a special train modelled on the Palace on Wheels to boost tourism on the Konkan route. The routes starts in Mumbai and travels to Sindhudurg, Goa, Pune, Kolhapur, Daulatabad, Ajanta Caves, Aurangabad and then back to Mumbai.
