Leaves from wildlife journal- Ranthambore National Park

Ranthambore National park in the town of Sawai Madhopur, in the state of Rajasthan, is a former private hunting reserve of the maharajas of Jaipur.

Though relatively small in size it is one of the most attractive Wildlife reserve in India. An original Project Tiger Site, it held only 14 tigers when it was authorized.
Its Tiger population has multiplied over the years, and now has numbers of leopards as well along with chital and water-loving sambar deer, chinkaras, nilgai, or blue bulls, sloth bears, jackals, wild boars, striped hyenas and others.
Leopards catch early sun on ledges. Golden jackals and jungle cats prowl for gnawers. Peacocks are everywhere around and in the forests. Woodland covers much of this well-watered 158 sq. mile reserve which also includes abundant system of lakes and streams hemmed in by steep high crags of the Vindhyas and Aravali Hill ranges in Southeast Rajasthan.

Besides, diverse wildlife species, the park is full of old mosque, wells and other past relics dating back to the 10th century where tigers come out dramatically from time to time, wandering among and resting atop the structures. Dominating all from atop a high crag is a magnificent fort, former centre of the Hindu Kingdom, later centre of the reign of the greatest Mughal Emperor Akbar. At its feet is India’s second most enormous Banayan Tree where troupes of langur monkeys spend their days- old ones holding council, mother nursing babies.

For a while Ranthambore was far famed for tigers which became so trustful of humans they appeared in daylight, sometime hunting, sometime with cubs, sometime with mates. Their unwariness sounded their death knell. Poachers killed many, but they are still here and their population steadily rebuilding.

For the best sightseeing of this world’s greatest reserve, the Maharaja Express Train Tour is an extraordinary retreat.
